A friend of mine was constantly encouraging me to look at fine pens. We went to his favorite purveyor of fine writing instruments and tobacco. Not having either addiction I was feeling safe. My mother always used a fountain pen and would immediately detect when her heavy handed children had attempted calligraphy with her Parker or Schaefer. I was handed a Mont Blanc pen and assured this was one of the finest pens available and I began to write. The black ink flowed smoothly from the pen but as I scrolled across the small sample tablet I felt a roughness and a reluctance of the pen to go where I lead. I tried several other pens and all were quite nice but not inspiring. The evils of a misspent childhood attempting to master penmanship and still remain undetected had somehow sensitized my touch to the device at hand. Mr. Stone, never to be outdone by a recalcitrant customer presented me with a Waterman Edson. It looked quite nice, not flashy and ornate, not presented in primary colors of plastic but a translucent blue that reminded me of the South Pacific. The size of the barrel was larger than some of the first pens I had tried and the smooth texture of the surface felt like silk in my hand. I began to write and the sensation was exquisite! The same paper the same pad felt entirely different. The pen was an extension of my thoughts and the words were able to flow beautifully across the paper. My thoughts were not worthy of the pen. I conjured up great thoughts to place upon the paper and immediately the lack of a spelling checker exposed my meager attempts for what they were. Still this pen was inspiring. I was sold. Then came the pitch, the 18Kt Gold Nib, the Gold plated cap the hand work, no leaking at high altitude, in case I might ever take the Concord…too late now. Then came the price. Did they understand how many Bic’s I could buy for that amount of money? Oh by the way there is a matching ball point pen for those hurried notes when you are too tense for a more leisured pace of a fountain pen. In one short lunch hour I spend much more than I had ever intended and have never been happier. I have the classic blue and I have also obtained the red and green Edson pens. These small luxuries give me joy in a rude and chaotic world. For the first time in a long time someone actually noticed my pen and commented on how nice it was and how good it felt in their hand. Sometimes you have to do a little extra searching to find the perfect match for yourself. I found mine with Waterman and your perfect pen is out there also.
